5 most important areas of industrial waste management

Industrial waste management is one of the main problems in Ukraine, as it requires substantial investments, modern equipment, trained personnel and extremely responsible approach. This industry does not stand still, the neutralization and elimination of waste hazardous to the environment and humans is carried out and mainly by commercial organizations.

There are a huge number of areas in the field of recycling industrial waste, among which there are five most important:

  • Disposal of industrial waste.
  • Chemical waste management.
  • Disposal of polymer products.
  • Disposal of warehouse waste.
  • Disposal of grease from grease traps.

In this article, we will discuss the need for and ways to dispose above mentioned types of hazardous waste, since they account for the greatest amount of harmful pollution that can cause an environmental disaster.

What is industrial waste?

Waste production refers to material resources that have lost their valuable qualities, as well as by-products from the integrated processing of primary and recycled materials (and their receipt was not the main purpose of the organization). Such products can be used as secondary raw materials.

Industrial waste includes:

  • Waste paper – paper, cardboard, textiles.
  • Glassware – bottles, jars.
  • Scrap metal – of ferrous, non-ferrous or precious metal.
  • Chemicals – alkalis, acids, organic liquids.
  • Petroleum products – lubricant, asphalt, bitumen, tar, etc.
  • Electronics – wires, microcircuits, boards, motor parts, batteries, control units, mercury lamps.
  • Plastics – PVC, PET, LDPE and HDPE.
  • Rubber – rolls, cameras, conveyor belts.
  • Biological waste – grease, food residues, sludge.
  • Wood – shavings, sawdust, twigs, leaves.
  • Construction waste – concrete, rebar, bricks.

“Garbage” of this kind can be reused, bringing benefits, while the disposal of industrial waste improves the environmental situation and the quality of life of the population.

In a situation where the disposal of industrial waste involves obtaining recyclable materials, the process is divided into several stages:

Primary – no chemical treatment, no disposal is required, materials are used for agricultural purposes.

Secondary – all materials have lost their original useful qualities and are deeply recycled.

Mixed – production waste from the first and second types regardless of quantity, with a possible change in composition.

As you can see, one of the main areas is a generalized concept, a set of recycling processes regarding any industrial waste. The next four refer to the disposal of specific substances. This will be discussed below.

Basic concept of chemical waste and preparation for disposal

Chemical waste from production facilities is one of the most dangerous and requires a professional approach. To dispose of this kind of waste it is necessary to follow some rules: special packaging and a prepared place for temporary storage until disposal.

Chemical waste is represented by:

  • Laboratory waste.
  • All kinds of chemicals.
  • Acids, alkalis, and other.
  • Pesticides and poisons from agricultural complexes.
  • Halogen waste.
  • Pyromaterials.
  • Flavorings, cosmetics, household chemicals, etc.

The need to dispose of polymer products

Polymer products are very well established in almost all areas of human activity. But despite all the positive properties of polymers, manufacturers have not invented a way to biodegrade them after use. Therefore, the problem of disposal of polymer waste is very acute.

Polymeric materials are divided into:

Thermoplastic – subject to remelting and manufacturing of new products; this includes wastes of LDPE, HDPE, PET, PVC, polypropylene, polystyrene.

Thermosetting – not subject to secondary melting, suitable only for recycling; represented by polyurethane, epoxy resins, phenolic resins.

Disposal of warehouse waste

Warehouse waste is represented by waste of all hazard classes, as well as sewage engineering waste. Depending on the activity of the enterprise, store, or organization, there will be corresponding waste. Most often it is packaging materials, unmarketable goods, rejected or expired products. And all these materials are subject to disposal.

Disposal of grease from grease traps

The fats that accumulate in the grease traps of catering facilities, canteens, cafes and restaurants also pose a risk to the environment if they are freely disposed of. Disposing of such waste is therefore not only a matter of compliance with legal regulations, but also a contribution to preserving the ecological balance.
